Senate Resolution

This Ho’omaika’ika’i Conference is an outgrowth of a 2008 Resolution of the Hawaii Legislature encouraging and supporting organizations to expand and promote Hawaii’s role as the “Spiritual Harmony Capital of the World”.

SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE ALL BELIEVERS NETWORK TO ESTABLISH
THE STATEWIDE INTERFAITH STEERING COMMITTEE TO EXPLORE THE
POSSIBILITY OF ORGANIZING A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL INTERFAITH
CONFERENCE IN HAWAII TO TAKE PLACE BY 2011.

1 WHEREAS, much of the violence in the world arises out of
2 conflict and misunderstanding between different religious
3 faiths; and
4
5 WHEREAS, an effective means for mlnlmlzing
6 misunderstandings between different religious faiths is to
7 promote open channels of communication between the various
8 religious faiths; and
9
10 WHEREAS, the Council for a Parliament of World’s Religions
11 is having its quintennial meeting in Sydney, Australia in
12 December of 2009, which will have an estimated eight to twelve
13 thousand participants; and
14
15 WHEREAS, the Legislature has received proposals for
16 pursuing a similar meeting of religious scholars and leaders in
17 Hawaii in 2011; now, therefore,
18
19 BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fourth
20 Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the
21 House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature
22 supports the efforts of the All Believers Network to establish
23 the statewide interfaith steering committee; and
24
25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in establishing the statewide
26 interfaith steering committee, the All Believers Network is
27 encouraged to make every effort to include representatives of
28 the various religious and interfaith organizations and groups
29 existing in Hawaii, including but not limited to: Baha’i,
30 Buddhism, Christianity, Church Women United, Confucianism,
31 Daoism, Hawaiian Spirituality, Hinduism, Islam, Knights of
1 Columbus, Jainism, Judaism, Mokichi Okada Association, Native
2 Americans, Church of Perfect Liberty, Quakers, Risshio Kosei
3 Kai, the Salvation Army, Seichi-No Ie, Shinnyo-En, Shinto,
4 Sikhism, Sufism, Unitarian Universalism, Unity, Zoroastrianism,
5 All Believers Network, the Interfaith Alliance, and the Open
6 Tablei and

8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that members of the statewide
9 interfaith steering committee are requested to select a
10 chairperson from amongst its membersi and
11
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the purpose of the statewide
13 interfaith steering committee shall be to develop and promote
14 interfaith activities to further relations between various
15 religious faithsi and
16
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the statewide interfaith
18 steering committee is requested to explore the possibility of
19 organizing a major international interfaith conference in Hawaii
20 to take place by 201li and
21
22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the statewide interfaith
23 steering committee is requested to convey to the Legislature no
24 later than December 2010, the results of its efforts to organize
25 a major international interfaith conference in Hawaii to take
26 place by 2011 i and
27
28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
29 Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the All Believers
30 Network, and that the All Believers Network transmit copies to
31 the various religious and interfaith organizations and groups
32 named in this Concurrent Resolution.
